Redesign and rescue

Making a 1,500-title catalogue scroll like a small one

Silver Stream - classic film and television

A streaming app with a 1,500-title catalogue of classic film and television. I redesigned the interface and fixed the performance problems that made a library that size stutter.

Built with

  • iOS
  • AWS
  • UI/UX

The problem

Fifteen hundred titles is the point where a catalogue stops being a list and starts being a performance problem. Every row is remote artwork, every scroll recycles views faster than the eye can follow, and anything done once per frame is done thousands of times per minute. An app that feels fine against test data falls apart against the real library.

This was also not a fresh start. The app already existed, already had users, and already had an interface that needed rethinking - so the work had to improve what was there without throwing away the parts that worked.

What it does

Interface redesign

The browsing experience was reworked so a catalogue this size is something you move through rather than wade into.

Performance work

The stutter that a 1,500-title library provoked was traced and fixed, rather than hidden behind a loading state.

AWS-backed catalogue

The library and its media are served from AWS, which the app talks to across every browse and playback path.
